Retinal Detachment

The curved back layer of the eye is called the retina.  It contains light-sensitive cells responsible for vision.  Sometimes the retina separates from the back wall of the eye, which is called a retinal detachment.  This is a serious condition that requires urgent treatment, usually surgery.  Vision will most likely worsen beyond repair without treatment.

Symptoms can include flashing lights and floaters, a curtain or shadow either moving in the visual field or blocking vision, visual distortion, or painless loss of part or whole of the visual field.

See your eye care professional at UFS Optical immediately if you have any of these symptoms or if you have any considerable changes to the way you’re seeing.

What makes ZEISS lenses with DuraVision® Platinum AR coating different? These hard and light lenses are very robust, dirt-resistant and easy to clean while offering first-rate anti-reflective properties. An integrated system of coating layers densely packed using ion-assisted deposition results in a lens surface that is three times harder than the previous generation of hard anti-reflective coated plastic ZEISS lenses.  ZEISS lenses with DuraVision® Platinum AR coating also have a more cosmetically pleasing, blue residual reflex colour that produces over 20 % less luminous reflectance than conventional green AR coated ZEISS lenses.

Have you considered an anti-reflective coating for you new glasses?

Lenses without anti-reflective technology reflect a significant amount of light. Surface reflections from lenses can distract the wearer and even interfere with vision, particularly in low-light conditions like night driving or when performing intensive visual tasks like computer use.

The anti-reflective technology helps reduce reflections to less than 1% of the incident light — compared with 7% to 13% for uncoated lenses. So if you suffer from unwanted reflections when driving, using computers or for any reason, please consider an anti-reflective coating on your next lot of spectacles.

You will look great, and see amazingly well!

What do you see? Floaters and spots

Floaters can be seen as dots, strands, cobwebs, circles or various small black shapes which move in your vision.  Floaters are very common and can happen at any age, although more common with increasing age.  You will particularly notice them if you look at a blank page, wall or the sky.

Floaters are caused by changes in the gel which fills the eyeball, leaving particles floating in this gel which cast shadows on the retina and make them visible to you.  Whilst most floaters are considered normal, they can be indicative of more serious eye problems.  If you notice new floaters or a change in the size and number of floaters, or if you notice unusual flashes in your vision, you should have your eyes thoroughly examined immediately.

What do your specs say about you?

A person’s spectacles reflect their character

The shape of our face plays a major role in selecting the right spectacle frames, but there are also other factors to consider.

Our friendly staff at UFS Optical will quickly recognise what type of spectacle frames are right for a patient’s type and face shape.

This is generally split into two basic areas: first, the type of person who wants “non-spectacles” – spectacle frames that blend as harmoniously as possible into the face and are largely inconspicuous.

The second type of spectacle wearer is more motivated by fashion and accordingly sees their spectacles as a fashion accessory.

At UFS Optical we have an amazing range of frames from the minimal look to the latest in fashion.

Come in and take a look!

Cataracts, a quick overview

Vision requires light to pass through the eye’s pupil then through the lens which focusses the light onto the back layer of the eye, the retina.  When this lens inside the eye becomes cloudy, it is called a cataract.  The more cloudy the lens becomes the more foggy your vision will be.  The major contributing…
